From The Root:
Malik Taylor, known as Phife Dawg, from A Tribe Called Quest, died Wednesday at the age of 45. Although the cause of death has not been released, Taylor had been battling Type 1 diabetes for several years.
Taylor’s music with ATCQ catapulted hip-hop to another level. The group’s albums The Low End Theory and Midnight Marauders are pieces of hip-hop nostalgia that will never go out of style.

I knew Phife had been battling diabetes for quite a while. I grew up listening to ATCQ. They were one of the groups that made me fall in love with hip hop in the first place. So many that I grew up listening to are one now. Heavy D,Tupac,Biggie,Jam Master Jay,Eazy E,Left Eye,Guru and Pimp C. It kind of makes me sad because it reminds me that a piece of my childhood is gone. But Phife will be missed. He was a hip hop legend.
Phife will be missed missed…for sure.
Ironically..I was looking at a local amphitheater to see what acts was playing there. One of the groups I sure hoped would be there was A Quest Called Tribe . Unfortunately, they wouldn’t be there and with his death, it only complicates things more. I was thinking about getting my kid sister and oldest brother some tickets to go for their B-days. They want to see old school rappers/Rand B singers
Phife and his friends were a one of a kind group. They ‘re rapping style couldn’t be duplicated no matter how much people would try. I still think about Bonita Applebum and Electric Relaxation..two of my faves.
Rappers like Phife were the true legends..what him and his group did was truly comprehensive rap music.
Amen to that!
