R.I.P. Bobby Womack

From The Guardian:

Bobby Womack, who has died aged 70, was one of the great soul singers, who, in a professional career that lasted nearly six decades, worked closely with leading musicians ranging from Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett and Sly Stone to Damon Albarn and Gorillaz.

Yet for many years, he was better known as a songwriter and session musician. The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, George Benson and Chaka Khan were among the many who recorded his songs and his funky guitar flourishes can be heard on records by Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin. But he will be primarily remembered for his voice, a rugged and emotive baritone holler that came straight from the gospel church.

Womack was born in Cleveland, Ohio, the third of five brothers. His father, Friendly Womack, spotted Bobby’s talent on the guitar at an early age, and Bobby was only 10 when he and the rest of his family started touring the midwest gospel circuit as the Womack Brothers, accompanied by their mother on the organ and their father on the guitar.

  1. @Nat, I remember reading ’bout that Cooke step-daughter debacle too, and I’d be lyin’ if I said it didn’t shock or give me pause, cuz indeed my stomach dropped when I heard that!

    1. I am beyond sick of adulation for celeb rapists/pedophiles. Singing a song causes reasonable doubt and amnesia obviously. The average rapist/pedophile won’t be remembered on an award show. Whether your in entertainment or construction, kick they ass to the moon the same. That’s someone’s child. Watch some dumbass say “We are only focusing on his music not his personal life…”

  2. Man, I love that song. It is so sad our musical legends are dying one by one. I know that no one lives forever but the quite demises of our musical legends is appalling to me. Now we are left with talentless, auto tuned ” musical artists” such as Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, Trey Songz etc. It is sad how much music and society denigrated in the last 30 years

  3. I still understand were Adeen is coming from. I will say black music has deteriorated in the last 30 years. Black music is in the toilet. They are calling white british artist soul singers. Something is very wrong with that in my opinion. When Bobby Womack was making this music, black music had quality artist were singing with their authentic voices. There was no auto tuning and sampling. Bobby Womack was an iconic artist. The man had soul oozing from this pores.
