Vern’s Venting: Cornel West Seriously…

Cornel West

by Lavern Merriweather

Don’t get me wrong. I used to have a tremendous amount of respect for Mr. West. To come up from his circumstances and make it as a noted college professor takes a lot of heart and discipline, as well as being a respected noteworthy voice on black issues. That could not have been an easy accomplishment, and he probably grew up with a shitload of obstacles his way. Yet, he managed to overcome them to be the man he is today, which is why I can’t understand why he is going out of his way to cause such grief for President Barack Obama.

Now, anyone who knows me knows that I have a very sore spot for the black folks who rush to criticize our current President, not because I feel he doesn’t deserve it, but because I feel it’s coming from an extremely wrong place. I fully understand that maybe Mr. Obama isn’t living up to some of the expectations that black people have put on him. However, that’s not what I have a problem with.

My problem is black folks who expect it ONLY from Mr. Obama and nobody else. This may cause some people reading this to roll their eyes, but I don’t give a shit.

I, for the longest of times, have made no secret how I feel about former president Bill Clinton or the way that black people shamefully gushed and worshipped at his feet as if he had just parted the Red Sea and led them to freedom. Black people had such a love affair with him that I was starting to believe they were hoping for an orgy wedding with him and Hillary. In many black people’s eyes Clinton could do no wrong, even when that was all he was doing. They either looked the other way or defend him like a gladiator.

A vastly different treatment than what President Obama is getting.

He is daily getting taken to task by orating luminaries such as Mr. West, Tavis Smiley and Michael Eric Dyson. Mind you, these are the same three Negroes who never uttered one negative peep against old Billy boy. Lately Obama has been getting flak from them over how he has handled the death of unarmed teen Trayvon Martin and the subsequent trial-verdict of his killer George Zimmerman.

Mr. Smiley being the most vocal and angry saying that Mr. Obama only held a press conference because he was forced to. That Obama probably wouldn’t have said anything unless pressured to do so. Well, no fucking shit Sherlock!

Do these assholes not get the fact that this man is the fucking President! He has an entire country to run and he doesn’t have time to focus on every instance or situation involving black people regardless of how horrific or tragic. He is a busy man and it’s not his responsibility alone to get outraged over Trayvon, Troy Davis, Oscar Grant, etc.

Now, having said that, it makes me think what the hell are they doing besides sitting around attacking him? I understand that there are some in the black community who half-heartedly desired some form of payback from Obama. They had a certain hope that the president was going in some small way to get even with white people.

So, I get it. You were itching for a little revenge and feel completely disappointed. To which I say, “Too fucking bad” because that was your fault for having that mindset in the first damn place. And even if their attitude has nothing to do with that, I’m still sick and tired of these demanding-ass whiny Negroes crying foul when it suits them.

I don’t think one person would open up their mouths and utter any attack on John Kerry, nor would they give a verbal whipping to Bill’s wife Hillary or sleazebag John Edwards. I won’t mention any Republican nominees or Presidents because we now from jump street that they don’t give a rat’s ass about us, but neither do a lot of white males who are Democrats!

Still, black people think little of behaving as if they were born from a penis made of gold, that they are the end all be all and will idolize these white males to the point that come across as brainwashed lemmings in a cult. Mr. Obama is facing enough of an uphill battle from many members of Congress and American citizens involved in this whole ‘tea party’ bullshit.

Tea Party Patriots

Mr. West himself is no stranger to adversity. So, why is he doing his damndest to undermine a fellow successful black male in one of the hardest jobs in the country? Even if it’s also the most prominent, being President in America is the most important title anyone born here can ever have. And just because a black man now has become President, it doesn’t mean the crabs in the barrel should be allowed to get away with treating him in such a shitty way, especially when they are too chickenshit to do it to a white male in office.

I read a lot of comments on blogs from black people who say that Mr. Obama has no backbone. Now, if that ain’t the pot calling the kettle black. Please! Like those Negroes who believe that they are such badasses by picking on a safe target can talk.

I have no qualms about Obama taking his slings and arrows from black people if they were also just as willing to do that with a white male, which as far as I have seen has never been the case. That also goes for the Negroes who bitch that Obama has been meeting the needs of gay folks, Hispanics and Arabs over their own. Correct me if I’m wrong, but were YOU all screaming for their rights above your own as well?

Don’t piss and moan at Obama if he is only following the example that you set!

And how dare you whine about putting others needs ahead of your own? You can’t be a crusader and selfish at the same time, just like you can’t expect a man who already has the fullest plate in the world to drop everything he is doing because you feel neglected.

Your well- being and welfare is first and foremost your responsibility. And if you think that it should also be that of the leader-in-chief, then say that same shit when a white male is in charge, instead of acting all fucking giddy over them like some tween girl who has seen her latest pop star crush on the cover of People magazine.

  1. Blah, Blah, Blah, another person expecting Black folks to stay silent while Obama works in every other groups interests, BUT Black folks. Last time I checked, we gave him 97 percent of our vote, and have a RIGHT to expect something in return other than empty speeches that we need to be more responsible.

The question that should be asked is this; are those criticisms of the president legitimate??? Lastly time I checked West was criticizing his policies and not the president personally, so yall need to stop with the lame equivocations with racist White people.

“He has an entire country to run and he doesn’t have time to focus on every instance or situation involving black people regardless of how horrific or tragic. He is a busy man and it’s not his responsibility alone to get outraged over Trayvon, Troy Davis, Oscar Grant, etc.”

Interesting but he has the time to visit victims of Sandy hook, Hurricane Sandy, etc. What yall Negros got to say about that??

“I understand that there are some in the black community who half-heartedly desired some form of payback from Obama.”

Huh?? Where is your evidence for such a statement? Sounds like you are the one with the agenda…

“I don’t think one person would open up their mouths and utter any attack on John Kerry, nor would they give a verbal whipping to Bill’s wife Hillary or sleazebag John Edwards. I won’t mention any Republican nominees or Presidents because we now from jump street that they don’t give a rat’s ass about us, but neither do a lot of white males who are Democrats!”

And they rightfully DESERVE to get criticized, just like Obama….

“I have no qualms about Obama taking his slings and arrows from black people if they were also just as willing to do that with a white male, which as far as I have seen has never been the case.”

Thats an interesting conclusion, so the advances that Black folk have made in the last 50 years happened because of the kindness of the various White Republican and Democratic presidents, as opposed to us putting press on their administrations and forcing them to focus on issues that are important to us. Sounds like you need a history lesson…

“Your well- being and welfare is first and foremost your responsibility.”

Why don’t you tell Obama to say that crap to the next audience full of White people that he sees?!? Our unemployment rate is three times that of Whites, the schools that serve our children suck, our communities our falling apart, and you have the nerve to write such nonsense……..

    1. First of all if Obama is looking out for everyone else’s interest while ignoring ours after we gave him 97 percent of the vote how does that make him ANY different than a white male such as Bill Clinton or Kennedy? And for your info West has made a number of his criticisms personal in fact he has from day one. And hurricane Sandy was a NATIONAL tragedy any president in office would be expected to do so. And since you asked I have overheard several conversations around the city of black people hoping for Obama to get even as well as on the message boards. As for John Kerry and white politicians that is my whole point furthermore you seem to need some reading comprehension skills because I never once said that white male politicians don’t do anything for black people. But they sure as shit don’t do enough to warrant all the glory and worship that they get. Most if not all white males that have affected change did so because they had an agenda or were browbeaten by activists like Harry Belafonte and Dick Gregory. As for how bad it is in the black community it has been that way for YEARS so perhaps it is you who needs the history lesson. And maybe sometimes communities suck because the people who live their aren’t doing enough to improve things. Last time I checked using the word ‘nigga’ walking around with your pants on your ass, hanging on street corners in front of a liquor store all day, and treating education as if it were a disease are not gateways to success. There are many problems in the black community that need to be solved by BLACK PEOPLE themselves instead of expecting the first and probably only black president to hold our damn hand all the time.

      1. “First of all if Obama is looking out for everyone else’s interest while ignoring ours after we gave him 97 percent of the vote how does that make him ANY different than a white male such as Bill Clinton or Kennedy?”

It DOESN’T!! That’s why I WROTE we need to do the same to him that we did to all of the White presidents, PUT PRESSURE ON HIM. If you actually read what I wrote you would know this…..

“And hurricane Sandy was a NATIONAL tragedy any president in office would be expected to do so.”

But the deaths of over 500 people, a good portion of whom are children, in YOUR OWN HOMETOWN isn’t something you need to focus on? Furthermore, Obama made it a point to visit the trapped White miner, White people who lost their homes to floods, etc. etc. etc. Please, give me a good reason to ignore this….

“ As for John Kerry and white politicians that is my whole point furthermore you seem to need some reading comprehension skills because I never once said that white male politicians don’t do anything for black people. But they sure as shit don’t do enough to warrant all the glory and worship that they get. “

So why do Black people worship these people, and why should WE WORSHIP OBAMA IN THE SAME WAY? And what does this have to do with me? I don’t worship politicians of any color…….MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHECK YOU THINKING AND COMPREHENSION skills…

“Most if not all white males that have affected change did so because they had an agenda or were browbeaten by activists like Harry Belafonte and Dick Gregory.”

What I wrote was very similar…..so what is your point? We need to browbeat Obama so he can do something for our community.

“And maybe sometimes communities suck because the people who live their aren’t doing enough to improve things.”

Like what exactly? Give some examples…Furthermore what institutions in the black community are actually owned or run by Black people besides churches? Schools? Nope that’s White people. Public Safety? Nope that’s White people. Local businesses? Nope that’s mostly non-Black people.

“I checked using the word ‘nigga’ walking around with your pants on your ass, hanging on street corners in front of a liquor store all day, and treating education as if it were a disease are not gateways to success. “

You sound and read sillier by the sentence. These are OUTCOMES that you describe, outcomes that are PRODUCED by a lack of political and economic power that translates into high unemployment, crime, and broken families. BLACK PEOPLE GETTING INVOLVED IN THE POLITICAL PROCESS, i.e. putting pressure on OBAMA and his minions will help to solve these problems…..

And as for Brothawolf, I will keep it respectful cause this is your blog (home), what about my perspective makes me troll? That I don’t think it is my job to defend him, what exactly has Obama done for my community that I should be sitting in silence for?

  2. Cornel West is quoted as saying the following with respect to the 50th commemoration of the March on Washington:
    .
“We had very low quality leadership today on the stage. We saw bona fide apologists for the Obama administration. There was no serious talk about Wall Street. There was no serious talk about the new Jim Crow, no serious talk about drones, no serious talk about the U.S. security state, no serious talk about the massive surveillance state. It was about just voters’ rights and maybe some vague reference to jobs. Martin Luther King Jr. turns over in his grave. He turns over in his grave.”
    .
“It was JUST about voters’ rights and maybe some vague reference to jobs!!!!?” Is the man insane? Voters’ rights is the very foundation of this democracy! And when he and Tavis Smiley were out hawking their books during their so-called poverty tour – which seemed to disappear as soon as the election was over – “jobs” seemed to be the most important word in their vocabulary. So why is the subject of jobs lest than important today?
    .
The fact is, the United States is currently knee-deep in a CLASS WAR. The corpo-Republican coalition doesn’t care any more about poor and middle-class White people than they do Blacks, women, gays, or Hispanics. So they have a vested interest in keeping the American people miserable, angry, and divided in order to prevent us from coming together to mount an effective response to their agenda of 1). punishing America for electing President Barack Obama, and 2). lowering the American middle-class standard of living to conform to the new global economy. Therefore, anyone whose primary animus is to promote division in America without ever putting forward any constructive solutions to address our problems should be looked upon with deep suspicion, and that includes Tavis Smiley and Cornel West.
    .
We should also take into account their history and associations. Tavis Smiley is closely associated with numerous ALEC-associated corporations such as Walmart, Exxon/Mobile, Nationwide Insurance, and Wells Fargo Bank, and the ALEC Consortium is leaving no stone unturned to promote national policies that are directly focused toward undermining the interests of the poor and minority, including obstructing our right to vote.
    .
Smiley was also involved in the Wells Fargo “Ghetto Loan” scam, where Wells Fargo Bank agreed to pay $175 million to settle the discrimination suit which, according to the Department of Justice, targeted over 30,000 Black and Hispanic borrowers for subprime loans with a higher interest rate than for similarly situated White borrowers between 2004 and 2009. According to the Department of Justice, it was the second largest housing discrimination case in United States history (http://wattree.blogspot.com/2013/01/a-question-for-both-tavis-smiley-and.html).
    .
As for Cornel West, he joined forces with Ralph Nader in the 2000 Presidential Election to help get George W. Bush elected. Bush became President of the United States by winning the state of Florida by 537 votes. In that same state, the Nader/West coalition tore away 97,488 votes from Vice President Al Gore. So when we consider the fact that our current economic condition is a direct result of the economic policies of the Bush administration, Cornel West is more than just a little responsible for the very conditions that he’s now complaining about (http://www.uselectionatlas.org/RESULTS/state.php?year=2000&fips=12).
    .
In addition, people like Tavis Smiley, Cornel West, and Boyce Watkins are going out of their way NOT to tell the Black community that the United States Constitution gives sole control of spending to the United States House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Republicans. So the only way that President Obama can spend any money to assist the Black community is to get the Republican House to go along with him.
    .
That’s why it’s so important for the president to hold together a coalition of Blacks, women, gays, Hispanics, and every other segment of the American population. He needs ALL of us to place pressure on the Republicans to loosen the purse strings in order for him to get anything done. So anytime you hear Tavis, West, or Watkins pointing their finger at what President Obama is doing for any other segment of the population, they’re doing you a disservice.
    .
Here’s how politics works – you support me when I need you, and I’ll support you when you need me. So whenever President Obama does anything for other segments of the population, he’s building up political capital so he can help you. But, he doesn’t discuss what he’s doing for the Black community for a very good reason – as Cornel says himself (when it’s convenient), “Race Matters.”
    .
These gentlemen know full well that if President Obama runs around bragging about what he’s doing for the Black community, the Republicans are going to use that as leverage to tear his coalition apart. They would tell women, gays, Hispanics, and everyone else in America that Obama doesn’t care about them; all he wants to do is help his own people, and that message hurts the Black community. Don’t these so-called intellectuals recognize that? If they don’t, they’re dumb. If they do, that means that they’re purposely trying to mislead you. The question then, is why?
    .
So the fact is, when people like Tavis, West, and Watkins run around telling you that the proof that President Obama is not working for you is that he refuses to throw his fist in the air, these people are working against you, not for you – and they know it. You see, their primary agenda is NOT about helping the Black community. Their agenda is about tearing down President Obama, and that hurts you.
    .
President Obama is trying to help ALL of the people – and that includes you. So Tavis Smiley and Cornel West needs to shut up and cleanup their own act. Thus, Cornel West has a lot of nerve talking about Martin turning in his grave. The fact is, if and Martin could see the self-serving and petty demagoguery of these two, he wouldn’t just be turning, he’d be spinning in his grave. And if there was any true justice in this world, Just mentioning the names of Martin Luther King or Malcolm X would cause Tavis and West’s mouths to foam.

  3. Perhaps the black community should not expect anything from President Obama. We should not be critical of his failure to address the state of urban communities. Maybe we should not expect him to address that black unemployment is more than twice as high as whites. We must allow him to remain silent on the amount of unqualified teachers TEACHING in inner city schools and how these schools are grossly underfunded. Perhaps we should not expect him to address gang violence in CHICAGO – in which kids are afraid to walk to school. Racism should definitely be off table for Obama – He should not speak out on the killing of an unarmed black boy in Florida. We should not expect him to speak on institutionalized racism in America. Maybe Obama should continue to ignore the issues raised above. Because let’s be honest the real reason black folks are in their current condition is number one they are lazy and number two they have not pulled themselves up by their bootstraps. Perhaps if we keep the statuesque and not rock the boat, Obama can complete his presidency without looking like he is president of Black America. Is that what you are saying?? I certainly hope not. This kind thinking is sickening and pathetic. Obama and all elected officials should get called out on the carpet when the needs of American’s are not being addressed.

I am offended and disgusted by black, white, orange, purple people trying to sideline black people. Why shouldn’t we demand that elected officials, Obama, represent our interest? We are the ones that pounded the pavement, worked phone banks, donated our hard earned money and time to see him elected and reelected. The LGBT and Hispanic community overwhelmingly supported Obama. And we see that he has and is addressing their interests. He has spoken out on policies that directly impact these communities. At no time was he coined as president of the gays or Hispanic community. However, when black folks demand that he address an unemployment rate of over 15%, neighborhood gun violence, subpar schools and economically depressed black communities – oh wait, he can’t. He will look like he is president of black folks. He doesn’t have time for that he has a nation to run. It’s funny because this country can recognize hardships in every other community except the black community. The black community is the ONLY community President Obama visits and serves up the same “take responsibility” rhetoric. When he travels to old struggling manufacturing communities you will hear him state “America has failed you – You are not in this by yourself- We are going to help rebuild your communities”. I have never heard Obama speak those words when addressing the black community. What other race of people have endured more hated and vitriol in America? The racism and hatred runs so deep in our country that black people have internalized it and many hate themselves. Our community has imploded from within and we are committing genocide.

Our community has real issues that need to be addressed. Obama is feeling heat from people like West because people are hurting. People’s lives are being torn apart due to violence, drugs, and job loss. People are looking AS they SHOULD to their elected officials to institute policies to remedy the distress. Obama taking time to address these issues does not make him a president for black people. It would make him the first president to realize that our community is in dire straits and action needs to be taken.

But you know what I take Obama’s presidency as a teachable moment. Perhaps over the 7 past years black people have awaken and will mobilized to put people in office that will serve our needs and interests. I mean Wall Street does, the pharmaceutical industry does. It’s time we put our agenda, our interests in the forefront. Are our issues and hardships not as important as others? I say we create a black agenda. Tell politicians our political and policy platform-lets force the next president to deal with our interests since so far they all refuse to do so.

      1. What you said is a complete crock! I have very raraely if ever seen black people put nearly as much pressure on a white male president who is a Democrat and certainly not Clinton. He gave black folks every opportunity to call his out which they never did. Black people rushed to defend him though point to me one thing Clinton that warranted such unwavering loyalty! Black people were twenty kinds of angry about Shir

    1. Those types of problems have been around BEFORE Obama even got here so why are we putting so much heat on his back when we NEVER put any on white male’s? And despite what some black folks think black people never hold a white male’s feet to the fire like they do a fellow black person. Now all of a sudden we demand a magic fix when we didn;t seem to need one while goofy Negroes were rushing to defend a nasty dirty old white male sleazebag

  4. I wrote a comment that got cut off but what I was saying is that black people were mad at Obama about Shirley Sherrod yet said ZERO about Clinton and the shitty way he treated both Lani Guinier and Sistah Soldier. And I don’t know you personally so how the hell could I judge stupid who you criticize and who you don’t . But the majority of the time black people get very bold with a black person to the extent that they DON’T with a white person. I have seen it happen far too many times and why the hell is nobody telling the MAYOR of Chicago or the governor of Illinois to do anything? Are they not obligated to help the citizens living right under than damn nose. Furthermore Chicago is NOT his hometown he only lived her briefly and even if it were that’s no excuse to expect him to save a group of people who obviously think so little of each other’s lives that they believe violence is the only way to resolve their problem. And just because you don’t own an istitution doesn’t mean you can’t take full advantage of it’s resources. Instead of whining and making excuses or treating education like it’s a bad thing. And since when does thepresident have to be repsonsible for every black individual’s personal
accountability? If you don’t care about learning or getting an education if you think that speaking correct English ids some type of betrayal if you wear saggy pants hanging on your ass if you treat your own fucking neighborhood liek a dumpster if you let your kids run wild with every idiot and lowlife on your block that is YOUR fauk

    1. With all due respect after reading your response I feel as though you did not grasp the message in my post. Instead of rehashing my points I would like you to take a moment and watch a video by Dr. Claud Anderson. Dr. Anderson does an amazing job of explaining why Back America is in its current state. I guarantee after watching this video you will have a better understand of the plight of black folks.
